An increasing number of women of all ages are taking off to roam the globe. But, says the Youth Hostel Association’s Tenille Knight, women need to research their destinations, be well prepared and take particular care while travelling.
Knight will be presenting a talk at this year’s Expo. “Today’s young women are settling down and starting their families later in life,” she says. “This gives them more time to chase those travel dreams their mums or grandmas may have never had the chance to.”
Her tips include: pack an over-the-body bag and keep your belongings close or locked up at all times.
When on the train, in a café or internet booth, wrap the strap of your luggage around your leg or arm, and if you’re withdrawing a large amount of cash, keep it in a money bag around your waist.
Lauren Resnick, author of Princess With A Backpack and an experienced traveller, says it is amazing how differently people will treat you when you have your backpack on and are dressed decently and have your hair done. She offers tips for, among other things, looking your best, packing wisely, staying safe and avoiding jetlag.
Resnick suggest getting a hassle-free haircut before you leave, add a touch of gloss to your lips, giving each city two days and each country two weeks and asking hotels for rooms designed for the female traveller that aren’t down dark laneways.
The message is: have fun, look your best but don’t take unnecessary risks.

If you know me, you know I love Ms Kardashian… and thought it would be great to share her number 1 travel accessory with you.
Just as I have advocated in my blogs and book, you really can’t go past a great pair of sunglasses (or two). Find your fave and they can transform your outfit.
Kim notes: “My absolute favorite brand of sunglasses is Dita! They make the coolest pairs of glasses that are stylish and are such great quality and really sturdy, which is really important for me in a pair of sunglasses since I can’t stand those flimsy ones that you know are going to get broken in five minutes! I travel a lot and the best accessory to any outfit is a good pair of sunglasses so that you can wear no make up and no one will ever see how you look because the glasses cover it all! Haha.”
Great for tired jet-lagged eyes, or if you’ve spent all night dancing away… best cure to cover a hangover.

Our fave man knows how to travel in style. Ohh how I love that private jet….
Legendary Largerfeld….
“Of course there are some evening dresses that you cannot wear in daylight because it would be ridiculous, but there is a kind of dressy touch for daywear, too, … And everything, it’s easy. (There’s) no barrier between dressy, day and sports. It’s feminine 24 hours a day.”

I just had to share these phenomenal photos… You don’t get much better than this. A hotel made for Princesses!
Check out the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona. The launch was celebrated in November 09 with an extravagant gala attended by the city’s style leaders and elite.
Seriously talented Spanish-born Milano-based architect, Patricia Urquiola, was responsible for the interior decor of the 98-room hotel, plus most of the furnishings. Style doesn’t come sexier than this…
One way ticket to Barcelona needed immediately.

Its all about planning…You want the new Chloe Marcie Bag or the Louboutin Hobo Bag with Hand Wrapped Leather Handle? Well you can! Just make sure you’re clever when travelling and plan ahead….
Follow these rules:
1. Think about the following:
What places you want to visit and for how long
Do you want flexible dates
Where you are going to stay
What to take with you
How much money you can spend
2. Learn Local… basic words, the currency rate, transportation, accommodation rates etc.
3. Buying your Tickets:
Order your airplane tickets in advance, generally, the more in advance, the cheaper.
When it gets to less than two weeks before your travel departure date, tickets will be much more expensive.
Travel guides always recommend you shop around for air tickets and Kayak.com will allow you to compare prices from various airlines. The more money you save on airfares, the more money you will have for that Chloe!
4. They also have great packages and specials available. Do the following:
Write your travel budget down
Make sure your health insurance covers when traveling abroad
5. Its a gross word, but sometimes you have to Budget:
Consider the following:
Food
Accommodation
Sightseeing
Internal travel
Souvenirs
Entertainment costs
6. Extra Tips:
Always have extra cash on you. When traveling unexpected things can happen – you could lose your credit card or have your wallet stolen, so it’s better not to keep all the money in one place – make sure you have some extra cash in a different pocket or in the bottom of your backpack.
Its worth a little effort upfront to ensure you have a great time, without money worries. Oh and my last tip? Pack light – more room for more bags

Avoid check-in problems by following these tips:
- Cap your can of hairspray
- Remember to put the lid on aerosols
- Put tweezers in your checked baggage.
- Put liquids in a plastic bag
- Try to stay within luggage weight limits.
Make traveling easy by following these tips, and also more time for duty free!
Luggage, whether you are checking it or waiting until it turns up on the baggage carousel, can be a burden.
One tool to make things easier is the website www.luggagelimits.com.

Your Princess guide to selecting accommodation overseas… Follow these tips for peace of mind when traveling:
Plan to plan, but also know you can move around.
If you book something and it’s a disaster you can leave.
Once you get to a destination, you can take the first day or two to explore and see if there is somewhere better to stay if you are unhappy with your first choice.
Book online with Kayak.com or priceline.com – you will definitely find the best offer in your price range
Research before you go. Most hotels or hostels will have images of the rooms and overall look of the place. If they don’t, email and request some – know what you’re getting into before the purchase.
Ask around! Ask other travelers or email lauren@princesswithabackpack.com the best places I’ve stayed at have been based on recommendations.
There you have it…easy tips to follow, and many more in my book Princess with a Backpack, available on-line: www.princesswithabackpack.com
